- And Connect with the customer.
The most important thing is your ability to CONNECT with your potential customers. Whether through the Ad, or through the content of the product itself. They have to be able to relate to what you’re selling, and be able to see a ‘vision’ as to how the product will HELP them.

You’ve likely read dozens of articles on why you should use certain Internet marketing strategies. The good news is many of them seem to have potential so you begin the art of Internet marketing.
However, this article is intended to point out those Internet marketing strategies that just don’t work. I know what you’re thinking – you’re wondering if you might be on the wrong track and perhaps you’ve been wasting your time. Hopefully this article will help clear things up for you.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – Here is a strategy that just doesn’t work (if you don’t use it). Far too often online, business owners work hard to develop an SEO strategy that encompasses Meta title information as well as keyword rich content only to abandon the idea at some point. SEO WILL NOT WORK if you don’t keep at it.
Calendar of Events – This strategy is also problematic – especially if you list events that were outdated more than a year ago. Usually a calendar of events page starts out with great intentions, but gets lost in the shuffle at some point. If no one updates the calendar and you’re not hearing from customers it’s quite possible your customers are going elsewhere because the site feels very old somehow. If you are unable to keep up with changing time sensitive information it might be in your best interest to remove it from your site altogether.
Site Design – As a business owner you have the right to fine-tune your website as often as you need to. Right? Well your site design tells your customer a lot about you. If the site looks like it’s been thrown together it tells the customer to move along. So, Site Design is a strategy that doesn’t work if you don’t ultimately care about putting your best face forward.
Glitz & Glam – Many site designers are being deluged with requests for upscale Flash design that may include graphic and animation combinations with a twist of audio thrown in for fun. You might want to ask yourself if the primary target for your site care about content – or a few bells and whistles. If the add-ons don’t contribute to the effectiveness of your website in reaching customers it may also be a strategy that is just not useful.
Some Internet marketing strategies don’t work because you haven’t given them enough time to make an impact. Other Internet marketing strategies may not work with the target audience you are attempting to reach. Finally, there are marketing strategies that don’t work because they require consistent upkeep. Learn to tell the difference and your marketing strategies will improve.

Let’s face it. There are an endless number of marketing strategies and tactics that a small business can employ. And when you factor in all the different combinations of these, the task at hand of choosing which ones to use can be both daunting and overwhelming. Do I join a networking group? Should we advertise in the local newspaper? Should we participate in a trade show? Do we need a web site? All these choices can confuse you if you let them and simply put, a confused mind typically does nothing, it tends to lock up, and worse yet it typically doesn’t take the actions necessary to grow — actions such as marketing your small business.
So what I’ve done for you here is identify 2 types of marketing strategies that every small business must have to not only survive but thrive. So here goes:
1. A “Lead Generation” Type of Strategy
This type of marketing strategy at a minimum brings awareness to your target market of who you are, what you do, and why they should listen to you. It should help you generate interest amongst your target market in what you bring to the table — enough interest where they inquire about your products and services — they become a prospect for you.
Some examples of “Lead Generation” strategies and tactics are:
* Advertising in trade magazines * Submitting articles to online article directories * Joint venture arrangements with others who serve your target market * Endorsements from others who have an influence over your target market * Referrals from others who have an influence over your target market * Ethical bribes — in other words offering something of value for free in exchange for contact information * Public speaking to position yourself as an authority in your field * Trade shows * Networking events to meet and greet your target market
And we can go on an on and on here. However as you are probably starting to see your choices are endless so where do you start? Well how about choosing one or two that resonate immediately with you and work those for a while. If they seem to be working, continue, if not try a different one. In other words do more of what’s working and less of what’s not. The point is get into action!
2. A “Keep-In-Touch” Type of Strategy
Once you’ve acquired leads using any combination of “Lead Generation” strategies and tactics, it’s critical that you find ways to stay in front of them — stay in front of them long and effectively enough to persuade them to respond positively to your call to action — eventually becoming paying clients.
Some examples of “Keep-In-Touch” strategies and tactics are:
* Sending out a weekly newsletter * Participating in online forums and social networks * Making phone calls to share something your prospects may deem valuable * Attending regular networking events to reconnect with prospects * Emailing prospects an article that they may find useful * Send holiday and birthday greeting cards * Refer business to your prospects * Invite prospects to events * Be a connector by introducing one prospect to another that you feel they should know
And once again, we can go on an on and on here.
So in closing, keep it simple. Choose one or two from each type of marketing strategy and work them diligently. Yes you will definitely find that some are better than others for you however, I firmly believe that any one of them, if diligently applied, will bear fruit — you just need to take massive action.

Both the Squander-Bug and the Tight-Wad are equally assured of failure. Nevertheless, the Tight-Wad at least has the virtue of following an Internet marketing “strategy” of sorts, and when it fails it “fails better” (as Samuel Beckett would have put it) simply because although time has been wasted, money has not been squandered!
Successful Internet Marketing Strategies
Successful Internet marketing strategies account for the fact that no business can be run free of charge and they seek a happy medium between the financial incontinence of the Squander-Bug and the constipated approach of the Tight-Wad.
1. Set a budget: For the home based business on a limited budget, the first thing to do is actually to set a budget, taking into account both the regular expenses that will be incurred and the one off expenses that are likely to be necessary as the business develops.
Thus, simply by sitting down with a pen and paper to think about expenses, the Internet marketer is forced to devote some time to thinking about Internet marketing strategy, because different strategies require differing amounts of investment.

Backlinks are a vital part of any viable Internet marketing strategy because a well linked-in website will rise up the rankings and feature prominently in the top 10 sites on numerous search engines when certain keywords are searched for.
There is not room to go into details here, but the link between keywords, backlinks and search engine rankings is a vital concept that Internet marketers need to grasp if they are to succeed online.
There are many other ways to build backlinks. Posting useful content on relevant forums, leaving useful blog comments on other people’s blogs and registering your website on website directories are just a few more ways to build backlinks for your site.
